My name is Kevin Kamau, and I grew up in Machakos County, in a neighborhood where everyone’s success was measured by who had the newest car or the biggest shop. I was ambitious, yes, but I had nothing—no money, no connections, and a stack of ideas that seemed bigger than my reality.
It all started one afternoon while discussing my plans with my childhood friend Brian. I was excited about a small construction project I had been working on, hoping to bid for a contract in the nearby town. Brian looked at me, shook his head, and laughed. “Kevin, you’re not ready for this,” he said mockingly. “You don’t have the experience, the money, or the skills.
